John Rice retired as vice chairman of the General Electric Company in April 2018, and he returned as chairman of the Gas Power business from December 2018 to August 2020.

Rice began his GE career in 1978 and has held several leadership positions in the United States, Canada, and Singapore. Beginning in 2010, he led the company's global operations based in Hong Kong. Immediately prior to that role, he served as vice chairman of GE and president and CEO of GE Technology Infrastructure, as vice chairman of GE's industrial and infrastructure businesses from 2005 to 2007, as president and CEO of GE Energy from 2000 to 2005, and from 1997 to 2000 as president and CEO of GE Transportation.

Rice holds a BA in economics from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and is a life trustee there. He currently serves as chair of the Woodruff Health Sciences Committee. He also serves as a director of Baker Hughes and AIG and was formerly a director of Li and Fung Ltd. and the CDC Foundation. Rice is a senior professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech.

He was elected trustee in 2006.
