Math/Computer Science honors four students

In recognition of their high achievement, four students received awards from the Math and Computer Science Department Sept. 15.

The Trevor Evans award, which recognizes outstanding performance by undergraduate majors in the department, was given to College senior Cyrus Bradford and 1995 graduate Matthew Kimball, who is currently in the department's master's program. The award, presented for the first time this year, will be given annually and is intended to help defray educational expenses. It was established by the family and friends of Professor Evans, department chair from 1957-72 and 1976-82, to honor his contributions to mathematics and Emory.

"These are excellent young scholars, and we are very proud to give the award to these two young men," said Professor David Ford, who presented Bradford and Kimball with the awards.

The Marshall Hall Jr. Award, which recognizes outstanding teaching by a doctoral student in the department, was given to Jyothi Suresh and John Harris. Suresh has completed her fourth year, while Harris recently completed his PhD in graph theory. Candidates for the award must have taught for at least two years and have strong academic records with promise for excellence in mathematical research. The award, established by Hall's friends and family, honors his contributions to mathematics and Emory, where he served as visiting Woodruff Professor from 1984 until his death in 1990.

Although Suresh and Hall could not attend the ceremony, Professor Ron Gould spoke to their accomplishments by saying, "The math community hopes this will be the start of long and productive careers."
